Entity

Entity combines the most modern of manufacturing and lighting technologies – 3D printing and the Philips Hue System. The two Hue modules inside Entity are controlled via an app on your connected device, and each one can display more than 16 million different colors. This allows to have very subtle lighting scenarios, but also quite bold ones, as well as bright and dimmed lighting.

The design draws inspiration from both natural forms and mathematical structures. Every element adheres to the parameters defined by the internal light modules. The overall shape emerges from the behavior of light propagation: the outer shell closes off in areas where the LEDs might cause glare, while it opens toward the top and bottom to maximize light output. An internal grid serves as the structural backbone, holding the entire form together.

Considerable effort went into optimizing the CAD files to ensure the design was both cost-effective and quick to print. The shell was divided into two parts with a carefully hidden seam, material thicknesses were minimized wherever possible, and a surface textures was applied to reduce the risk of printing errors.

On 30th April, 2014, Entity was introduced to the public during the Light & Building fair in Frankfurt.
